Kalapana Lava Hike
Easy Lava Hike
This 5 hour tour is a driving tour with a short, 10-15 minute walk
out across an old lava field to view molten lava flowing into the
ocean at night. This tour starts out with a drive through a
macadamia nut orchard and then a stop at the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut
farm. We then continue on to view lava trees and fissures located at
the Lava Tree State park in the Nanawale Rainforest. After viewing
the lava trees the tour continues on to a scenic drive down the
famous Kalapana Red Road, winds along Mango Grove Drive with a stop
at a scenic sea-cliff lookout, and finally entering the current lava
fields of Kalapana just before sunset. We then walk out over the old
lava flows to the shore where we look for the rivers of red, molten lava are
flowing into the ocean. You may see a new black sands beach being formed
right before your eyes!
The terrain is uneven so please wear closed-toe shoes such as sneakers. A universal tripod is set up for taking lava pictures with your camera, a telescope for lava viewing and chairs for sitting out on the lava. Tours includes light snacks and beverages.
*Please note, the lava conditions are always changing. Sometimes we are 1/2 mile from the lava at this viewing spot and sometimes we can only see the glow in the distance. Please call or email for a current lava report. We will update this page as much as possible.

Extreme Lava Hike
Join us as we travel down to "Uncle Roberts" in Puna. Walk over the newly formed land and feel the heat as a native Hawaiian guide leads you in search of molten lava. Feel the heat under your feet, hear the crackling of the lava and keep a keen eye out for surface outbreaks. This is an experience you don't want to miss! Lava is a natural event and can start and stop without warning.
When there is no Lava visible at Kalapana we will do an alternate high adventure hike for which our company has special permission and training from the National Park Service.
This tour includes up to a 9 mile hike over un-even terrain. We provide walking sticks and bottled water. Please call or email for current lava conditions and hike durations as the lava conditions here are constantly changing. We will update this page as much as possible.
